Journalism: 1D of the solo stories was due EOC today.

Language Skills: We partnered up and swapped 1D persuasive essays. Goal was to reverse engineer an outline from the text and compare it to the author’s original outline. If they matched, we had some effective communication.

Journalism: By popular whine, Greene pushed back the nxt deadline by 90 minutes.

Language Skills: Is humanity inherently good, or inherently evil? Opinions are still mixed, and being written up.

Journalism: Writing and interviewing time. Oh, yeah, these stories are getting a public airing in the media center.

Language Skills: From our persuasive-essay outlines, we began writing an essay.

Journalism: We summed up the results of our over-the-break assignment — figure out what is not being covered — then had to come up with a solo story. First draft is due Thursday, BOC.

Language Skills: We reverse engineered a student’s persuasive essay from a book of fancy essays.

Journalists: Who owns your brain? We made lists of the media we consume and traced its ownership as far up the food chain as we could. Surprise! It’s all owned by six companies!

Language Skills: We’re all taking part in the Great American Think Off. Greene handed out some stuff about persuasive essays and made us outline one about the nature of humanity.

Journalism: Greene collected the second draft of our stories and marked them up as we watched “Goodnight and Good Luck.”

Language Skills: Greene was squeaking pretty good by third block, but harassed us into using our 16 facts to write paragraphs.

Journalism: The Block of 1,000 Red Pens. Second draft of the second story is due tomorrow, BOC. Plus, Greene lost his voice.

Language Skills: Research concluded, it’s on to the sentences. Then the paragraph.

Journalism: Second IP story was due at EOC today. Tomorrow the red pens come out.

Language Skills: Writing assignment.

This is an exercise in research, information collation, information presentation, and writing.

Task one: Pick a research subject from the bag. Your first mission is to find 16 distinct facts about your subject, and use those facts to write 16 simple (one fact each sentence) sentences, each with parenthetical attribution. Example: “The common barnacle is threatened by ocean acidification. (Popular Science, Issue 12, “Bye-bye barnacle,” Sept. 17, 2012)

◘   “Crowd source” information about your topic. Write down any valid information you receive, along with information about your sources.

◘   Seek information using any book in C2024. Write down any information you receive, along with information about your sources.

◘  Post-lunch, seek information in the media center. Write down any information you receive, along with information about your sources.  Online sources are not allowed, however, you can use the library computers to search for books and journal articles.

Task two: Read over your 16 sentences and use the information therein to write a topic sentence for a paragraph about your subject. When you have your topic sentence, ask Greene to give you Task Three.
